Bentley Systems - Civil Construction Mobile App
Overview
Bentley Systems' mobile app is called ’Synchro Field’ and is predominantly used by construction professionals who are always in the field to report on and collaborate on various construction activities.
Challenges and opportunities
The current product was the result of an engineering driven effort that pretty much replicated the desktop app to mobile form factor. Not a lot of attention was paid to the contexts in which the mobile app was being used, which resulted in poor adoption by customers.
My contribution
Interviewed customers to understand how they are actually using our mobile apps. Aligned stakeholders on the importance of revamping the app with mobile use cases in mind. Helped prioritize mobile centric features to get a good V2 product out to customers. Designed the product end-to-end.

Old product
Not designed for mobile
The mobile app resembles the desktop version of the product and it’s information architecture.
Not considering the users'context
What users wants to do while in the field is very different from what they do while they are in the office.
Poor 3D model capabilities
The desktop 3D model capabilities translated poorly to the mobile experience, creating significant loss of service.
New design

A construction field engineer’s day revolves around two things. The tasks they have to perform and the weather conditions in which they will have to perform those tasks.
Simplified primary navigation that can still be operated while wearing a pair of gloves.
